The IMF's chief economist has warned that the global financial crisis is set to worsen and that the situation will not improve until 2010, a report said Saturday.
Olivier Blanchard also warned that the institution does not have the funds to solve every economic problem.
"The worst is yet to come," Blanchard said in an interview with the Finanz und Wirtschaft newspaper, adding that "a lot of time is needed before the situation becomes normal.

POLICE have arrested 124 people for 139 offences in one night during Schoolies Week on the Gold Coast.
However police praised the behaviour of school leavers on Saturday night as only 24 people of the 124 arrested were actually schoolies participants.
Among the 24 school leavers charged, 21 were male and 3 were female.

City officials have ordered 22 New York churches to stop providing beds to homeless people.
With temperatures well below freezing early Saturday, the churches must obey a city rule requiring faith-based shelters to be open at least five days a week -- or not at all.
Arnold Cohen, president of the Partnership for the Homeless, a nonprofit that serves as a link with the city, said he had to tell the churches they no longer qualify.

An Israeli researcher says he has developed a simple early-warning, painless and inexpensive blood test to detect colon cancer.
Nadir Arber, a professor of medicine and gastroenterology at Tel Aviv University’s Sackler Faculty of Medicine, said the test can detect cells of colon polyps — the precursors to colon cancer — in the blood, with a very high degree of sensitivity and accuracy.
